Learning has never been so easy!
This concept confused me for a while and I have come to understand it now, thanks to a wonderful instructor from Choice Solutions. In this how to I am going to break down how to license Citrix xen app and identify the moving pieces of the puzzle. Keep in mind I focus on Server 2008 r2 and Xenapp 6.5.
5 Steps total
Step 1: What is Citrix XenApp and why should I care?
Citrix Xenapp previously named Citrix Presentation server is a very impressive method of deploying software and applications to users in your environment. It's basically a hacked terminal server allowing the deployment of isolated sessions of applications to be accessed by end users. Example: You install Office 2010 on the app server, instead of installing it 100+ times on each desktop you can use XenApp to give them the software through a receiver tool. What this does is launch them a session on the server isolated with that program running. With improvements in this delivery method, it appears seamless to the user. Meaning it looks as if the application is run locally.
Summary: Install once, update one place, manage one box. vs hundreds.
Step 2: Step one Microsoft
You will need a MS server call for the physical or virtual server running your OS. In my case 2008 r2. Since this will also be used to run previously known terminal server operations you'll need a terminal server license or newly named Remote Desktop Cals. For RDP cals you'll need equal to the number of users accessing the server. If you have 30 users needed to use the server purchase 30 RDP cals.
Step 3: Step two Citrix
Citrix is simple, but confusing. All you need for the Citrix side of the license nightmare is one of two options. UserDevice Xenapp or Concurrent user licenses.
UserDevice licenses would most likely be what you need. These are used in one of two ways, 'Device' very simple each device that logs in consumes a licenses from the Xenapp licenses server. Not so good if one user logs into multiple devices. 'User' after a user has logged into I believe don't quote me, 5 different devices the 'Device Licenses' changes to user. Meaning that the user not matter how many times they are logged in consumes 1 licenses.
Concurrent Licenses, are for 24 hour operations companies. Where you have three shifts of workers, A B C. Each shift has no more than 20 workers. With this more expensive licenses you could avoid buying 60 userdevice licenses and just buy 20 concurrent licenses. However no more than 20 people can be logged in at one time.
Step 4: What about XenApp server licenses?
From what I understand you don't need any just licenses for the users to connect to the XenApp server.
Step 5: Tiers of Citrix Licenses
You have 3 different levels of licenses: Advanced, Enterprise, & Platinum. Below is a picture that explains briefly the differences. In a nut shell the higher you go the more money it costs the more features you get. It is up to you to determine which fits your needs. Ignore standard that was an old version for before it was called XenApp.
That is a general overview of Citrix Licensing for XenApp. If any of the information here is incorrect please leave a comment and correct me. I hope this was helpful to people new to Citrix!
